Hi everyone
Hope this is the right topic...
I was trying a foil project, I used 2 coats of Wunda size, then applied foil (pewter, I think it was prismatic, though I don't remember for sure, I've had it for awhile). Anyway, I went to seal it with FE colorseal (gloss) and it fogged, for lack of a better term, the foil. It didn't appear that the colorseal was cloudy, but that it did something to the foil. I left it overnight to see what would happen after it dried, but it stayed the same. Any ideas what happened or what I did wrong? I've since painted over it and decided to use metallic paint instead, but would like to know for the future.

Thanks
Mike

I love your tagline!

I'm sorry, I have never used colorseal, but I have used wunda size as well as foil so I'm going with the idea that there's something in Colorseal that does not live and play happily with wunda.

Sealer will fog if the room is too cold. Perhaps it wasn't anything more complicated than that?

ahh - well that reminds me. Wunda size never dries right? So the sealer has gone over a wet product - that will make it cloud. Colourseal must be an inpermeable clear coat.

I think if you wait long enough, it will go away as the sealer dries from behind - unless that's not possible either.

I'd tend to agree with Kathy. Why seal foil? It won't tarnish. Then again I don't use much foil so maybe I'm missing something.

Although the foil will not tarnish, the Wunda size can remain in a semi state of low tackiness. To seal it, I usually do one to two coats of either Benjamin Moore Clear (varnish/recommendation via Gary Lord)) - high gloss and/or Faux Effects/varnish plus (I think that’s the name) high gloss over the finish. The high gloss does not interfere with metallic sheen of the foil.

yup!! i agree with Barrie!
Color seal is usually used with Stain & Seal...I think.

It's suppose to seal color from fading.

I know you dont have to seal foil. But if you felt you had to then Ben Moore. Varnish Plus is one of my all time favorite varnishes.

Rolco slow size works a million times better then Wunda with foils.
...and it dries.

Wunda is something I only use to gild on top of lusterstone (or something porous) or paper.....and that's pretty much it.

Thanks for your help everybody,
Yep, I thought I should seal since the size would remain tacky. I have used Varnish plus before with no problems, but I had color seal on hand and it was a small area, so I thought I would use it. My understanding is that colorseal is used to protect delicate color work from hotter topcoats, so that's why I thought I would be okay using it for this. I learn something with every project.
I will stick with V+ in the future, or try Rolco.
Thanks again everyone

Mike
