Anita, your grandmother's disposition makes a lot of sense from the story you posted. Germany was in turmoil and financial despair from before WW1 to well after WW2. It is said that before WW2 if you were dining in a restaurant (if wealthy enough-most were not) the price of your meal could go up several times before you finished eating it. That is why so many were mislead by a megalomaniac that seemed to have all the answers and blame for their woes.
Tania, wow, thank you for that compliment. I think you are a very intelligent lady with an amazingly witty sense of humor. Not only that your extremely talented artistically and a great parent from what I can tell on here. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I am not at all confused by your comparison of my writing, and am only honored that you would. I am a closet comic nerd and my dream was to work for Heavy Metal Magazine when I grew up. Now you have my attention on this comic writer, Neil Gaiman. I am easily bored with today's fiction writers because of the lack of attention to detail and character development. So I rarely read fiction any more. I'm doing a search right now on him...
Wow, ok, I am definitely interested. He has a lot of work out there. Where should I start? I have a comic store across the street, what should I start with? I will move up to his books and rent his movies after I get a sense for his writing in comics. Thanks for the heads up!
Have you seen any of the stop-animation films by the Brothers Quay?
Filmography: http://www.awn.com/heaven_and_hell/QUAY/quay2.htm
I love their work, so full of allegory and wit. If you haven't, you might just find it interesting. Of course it's very dark (and sub-titles), and wouldn't appeal if that doesn't do it for you. La Cite Des Enfants Perdus (City of Lost Children) by Jeunet (my fave director right now) has the same flavor of the Brothers Quay work. A mix of post-apocalyptic and retro 40's influences. If unfamiliar with Jeunet, he did Amélie & A Very Long Engagement (most mainstream films). Skip Delicatessen if you have a weak stomach for gore. I am waiting anxiously for Life of Pi due out in 2008.
OK, I need to stop writing and get to work. I got ripped at my Halloween party Saturday night and am finally over the hangover. I was worthless yesterday. I was bummed, only 1 person could guess my costume (I guess because he was over 40 and musically inclined). I was dressed like a gypsy, painted a gold heart on my cheek and carried an antique bottle with a gold 9 painted on it. Any guesses?

Sherry-
Gypsy....and an over 40 year old musician guessed it??? I can only guess it's a Jimi Hendrix gypsy holding love potion number nine. The kiss on cheek I can't guess. Did I win anything????
Neil Gaiman is by far my favorite. My first book by him was Death. I liked it alot but when I read Sandman (dream) collection I was so hooked. I then got everything he ever wrote. In fact I got all the DC vertigo books and Dark horse. I was addicted to comic books at one time. Oh yah and I would get his book called "Mr. Punch." I recommend Sandman to start out, later the Dreaming.
I would read Gaimen's books first. I saw the Mirror Mask the other night and it was really slow. Cool visuals but slow. So don't rent it.
Yes I have seen every movie you listed and they are all my favorite. I really love Delicatesan and City of lost Children. I own those movies. |

Tania,
Great guess on the costume, but wouldn't she have to have a gold capped tooth? That would be a great costume! _________________ Kathy

Madame Ruth. And your right! It was a gold capped tooth! Too funny...how long have I been singing it with "Gold Tattoo". Just don't take me Karaoke-ing.
Funny you should mention Hendrix, here is a website called... www.kissthisguy.com where you can search a database for misheard lyrics and find a song by common mistakes. It's been around for at least 8 years (or more).
Love Potion No. 9
The Searchers
I took my troubles down to Madam Ruth.
You know, that Gypsy with the gold capped tooth.
She's got a store front down at Thirty Fourth and Vine,
sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine.
I told her that I was a flop with chicks.
I've been that way since Nineteen Fifty Six.
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign.
She said, "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine."
She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink.
She said, "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink."
It smelled like turpentine and looked like India ink.
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink.
I didn't know if it was day or night,
I started kissin' ev'ry thing in sight.
But when I kissed a cop down at Thirty Fourth and Vine,
he broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine. |

Gold Tattoo - that's hilarious - but Tania got it anyway. _________________ Kathy
