hi. Anyone see seans wallnut movie? If not what I am trying to do is a paneled door.
Problem is i dont know how to do the scematics of it. i understand the stiles are same and rails are same, in size.
What has got me confused is the lines that I draw for the shading and fading of the actual panels.
Im not sure how far or close to put them. Ive studied finks book and this brought some insight but neither the movie nor book teach you the measurements. Im not being very clear but i hope you understand.

I've been watching the DVD also. Do you mean the width of the entire trim piece (where the rail/stile meets the panel)? I'm guessing its probably around 3/4 inch. If you mean the stripes he is painting for the shadow and the highlight, you can probably just eyeball it to what looks good.
I'm probably the last person to give advice on this and don't know if I'm making sense anyway

Measurements for trompe loeil on a door or anything else are subjective. And often the bottom rail (or is it stile, whatever!) is usually slightly larger than the others.

You can figure out your own measurements by figuring that the doorknob needs to be centered in the stile (whatever the vertical piece is called). Both stiles would be the same measurement.

If you look at pics of old doors, you will see the widths of the decorative mouldings between the stiles and rails and the center panels are all up to the designer.

You can use the golden rectangle, or phi to determine mathematically which measurement will look the most beautiful with your door.

I took Pierre's class and he draws a cross-section profile of the moulding he wants on a piece of index card, then extends the lines to the edge of the index card and cuts a tiny notch there. He uses this card to mark the lines of all his mouldings on any given piece. The purpose of the notch is so that your pencil tip will automatically mark the right place. The purpose of the cross section of the moulding profile is so you can figure out your highlights and shadows. (They will be different if you have a flat surface, a concave surface, or a convex surface)

anita thank you!! that make sense. i kinda understand the notecard thing. fink should sell one on his site lol. i was prob just going to wing the stiles and rails. i was just confused on the lines where you fade and stripe. thank you all for the info.
