I finally finished a panel I started many months ago. I used golden paints with proceed glaze to do the graining and odds and ends for the grey value scale on the doorknocker. Trying to get my life more structured again. After taking care of my Dad for over three years, I am having to re-wire my brain to paint again! (Thanks to Carolina's class to kick me into gear!!)

thanks Jeremy. Your picture would be quite ambitious to paint, but wouldn't it be spectacular!

Jeremy, with your skills as a grainer, the trompe l'oeil should be not so difficult. The image can be transfered to your wood grained panel and then just keep looking back and forth to match values of highlights and shadows in the appropriate places. You can build up values with glazes or transparent washes, that way you do not lose the grain, and, although it will take a bit longer to build up layers of toning, for a beginner it is a little less intimidating to see things happen gradually than to go right away to an intense toning color. Once you get the hang of it, then you will also have more confidence to mix more saturated toning glazes or washes.
The key to a good trompe is careful observation of reality.

Nice work, T! Always love to see the in-process photos and finished project. And glad to see you painting again for your own enjoyment.
Jeremy - that would be stunning as a trompe l'oeil panel! "Do it - and let them see you do it" (from 'Braveheart'.) Anyway - would love to see you do this panel - your graining skills are awesome, so you have that part done already, right?
