I've been asked to do this stencil http://www.royaldesignstudio.com/shop_stencils_detail.php?id=1694 on two angled walls that reach the peak of an 18 ft cathedral ceiling. I have never done an allover stencil. Is this even possible on these angles?

A drawing of the shape would help comments. In my experience unless verticals and horizontals are level and no sloping walls or coombe ceilings it is possible, otherwise a recipe for disaster.

Geometric designs have low tolerance to imperfect surface areas. any discrepancies of surfaces are accentuated by the design.

I did a odd shaped room with wallpaper. Horse head repeat .was a nightmare. like puting square pegs in round holes. I should have declined. Was for a professional Gambler. was not a winner for me.

Sooo...walls or ceiling? Do the tops of the walls meet? It would be easier with the math if that is true. Provide a picture, if possible. With that said, I would attempt it...just do the math and keep the stencil straight with a chalk line snapped to help.

Sure, just do the math to start out from center, separate walls are rarely the same length, even if meant to to be. Like Jeanne said, have more than one, two at least so you can cut one up as needed.

There sure are a lot of different opinions as to what a cathedral ceiling is, images here--

Ahhhhhh Brian

Separated walls a different kettle of fish. no conflict with adjoining surface

I was talking about adjoining walls.

Starting from the centre applies equally to quality patterned wallpapering. which after all is a repeated stencil. Good advice giving a pleasant Finnish.

I imagine that with Stencils you can afford to make the external finishing edge eye sweet.

I do hear you on the repeat around a room, Brian, difficult with papers, and especially in small bathrooms. The standard was always behind the door in the corner, which always bothered me, as always I knew it was there Sad

On stencils, the same thing can occur. On vertical stripes I have a special trick-- as I near the corner I slightly increase or decrease the stripe width, over several feet, and land perfect to the corner. This only works with a larger -sized stripe, say 4 inches or more. The human eye can't detect the slight change, and it's often easier math than trying to find a common width that will butt up to a corner on each different-lengthed wall of a room.

I wasn't able to get a photo of the wall to load. The wall comes to a peak, and then about 1/3 of the way across, takes a slight bend where there is a fireplace. The more I look at it, I just don't want to deal with all of these weird angles and small areas around the fireplace for my first allover stencil. Going to try to talk the designer into another option. Thanks everyone!

A photo/ drawing displayed here for reference. would encourage others to suggest ways of embracing the problem and enhancing the area of your project.

On here they are so helpful with suggestions. Which perhaps could assist you in the options you suggest to the designer.

Good luck.

Brian
