My suggestion is to proceed with caution
A friend used to do murals on shower tile, and prepped by brushing the tiles with acid to get "tooth", he said you could hear a cracking sound in the process. From there he based with alkyd, did the mural in alykd, then covered it with alkyd clear or a solvent polyurethane.
I'd tend to clean it, sand it, and hit it with a 2-part epoxy...or an alkyd primer until it covers, then a clear.
I guess spraying doesn't sound so bad now _________________ http://www.dec-arts.com
